The sneaker boutiques are designed to look different than your average shoe store, stylized with futuristic interiors including the iconic conveyor belt display in the Daikanyama store, and an elevator to transport sneakers in the Kyoto shop. Presented under the theme “Time,” the show included original works by several international artists and was on display in Tortona, Milan’s world-renowned creative district. The exhibition captured the brand’s vision for the future of automation and the infinite possibilities of electric innovation. Also known as the ‘Cloud Camo’, the iconic BAPE Camo print is perhaps the most fascinating element of the brand, as a graphic that has totally transcended streetwear to become one of the most iconic motifs of the past two decades.

BAPE's famous camo is now one of the most prevalent designs of current street style, while once-coveted rarities like shark hoodies and insulated snow jackets have become essential pieces every season. Many of the elder heads believe that the BAPE of today bears little resemblance to its forefathers, but whether this is a good or bad thing is, ultimately, a question of opinion. In many ways, it's still the same brand it's always been, defined by its young, consumptive audience's eager desire for anything on offer. However, amidst the hype, the decades-long history of this style movement can sometimes be overlooked, as in the case of A Bathing Ape.

The original reason for BAPE's scarcity was arguably one of financial necessity – Nigo started out on a tight budget and only afford to produce around 50 T-shirts a week – but he also disliked the idea of everyone wearing the same thing.

The brand has gained a massive following worldwide due to its unique designs and limited edition drops. Nigo has always been known for his unique fashion sense, and this is reflected in the designs of BAPE clothing. The brand is known for its bold and colourful designs, which often feature bold graphics and patterns.BAPE is famous for its iconic ape head logo, which is inspired by the 1968 film, "Planet of the Apes." The ape head logo has appeared on pretty much everything you could think of since, becoming a globally recognised symbol of streetwear.

Green and Yellow pair features 1ST CAMO lining and sock liners, the Japanese brand’s signature APE HEAD debossed on the lateral quarter, a BAPE STA™️ logo embroidered in white on the heel, co-branded silver eyelets, and a jumbo adidas Trefoil debossed in white on the tongue. The graphic blends a number of different elements in its design; firstly, its obvious reference to military camouflage fits perfectly with the Japanese (and entire fashion world) fascination with military clothing. Where camouflage is traditionally designed to conceal and hide, however, the BAPE camo manages to flip the script and become something that you just can’t ignore.

BAPE® MERCHANDISE

The inspiration behind A Bathing Ape is a combination of American hip-hop and Japanese street fashion. Nigo wanted to create a brand that reflected his unique style and passion for street culture. He combined these influences with his love of vintage clothing to create the iconic BAPE brand.

Rappers such as Lil Wayne, Clipse, and Kanye West were wearing and rapping about the brand. BAPE's influence was so significant that Pusha T and Lil Wayne even feuded over who knew about the brand first. In 2006, BAPE's popularity had grown so much, especially regarding the Bapesta shoes, that two flagship stores opened in New York City and Los Angeles.

The new interior featured metallic/glass furnishings, a neutral color palette, clean lines, framed graphic tees and notably, a pixelated BAPE camo print on the wall. Located on 34 Rue de la Verrerie (not more than a 10 minute walk from the Paris Supreme store), Highsnobiety went down to livestream the opening event with music from Busy P of Ed Banger records. The graphic blends a number of different elements in its design; firstly, its obvious reference to military camouflage fits perfectly with the Japanese (and entire fashion world’s) fascination with military clothing.

Though the BAPE story wouldn’t be the same without its meteoric rise to success in the States, the brand’s newfound popularity brought with it a number of problems. Scarcity of product in the U.S., combined with BAPE’s unusually high prices for young western consumers, led to the proliferation of counterfeit product, saturating the market before the brand could find its feet. BAPE's relatively-sudden explosion also meant that its popularity became more of a fad or passing trend than the slow and carefully-cultivated hype that it had built in Japan. Then, in 2007, the notorious video for Soulja Boy’s ‘Crank Dat’ was released, featuring Soulja Boy’s own Bapestas heavily (though their authenticity has been called into question) along with the line, ‘I got me some Bathin’ Ape’.

First dropped in 2000, BAPE STA™ became an instant icon as the signature footwear of A BATHING APE®. The star-shaped “STA” logo sweeping along the sides and the vibrant collection of colourways and designs has been a defining feature of Japanese hip-hop streetwear over the last 20 years. With every new intriguing design, collectors and fashion leaders all over the world have been wrought with excitement. The unique style has also attracted the attention and involvement of international celebrities, including Kanye West, Pharrell Williams, Jay Z, and Pusha T to name a few.

Immersed in his intricate landscape, Ilizarbe’s work often relates to architecture, completely altering it to offer the viewer a separate universe in which to exist — like stepping into the other side of a mirror. 34 units of 1000% BAPE® BE@RBRICKs line-up the exhibition space, including special collaboration BE@RBRICK with renowned Japanese artist Hajime Sorayama. To celebrate 30 years of BAPE® , the gallery invites 12 up-and-coming and established artists from around the world to create 16 never-before-seen artworks that highlight the monumental influence of the brand as a cultural mainstay. BAPE GALLERY™ once again melds fashion with art in a global art tour spanning four cities, kicking off in Beijing.
