BAPE: The Iconic Streetwear Legacy

Of course, there’s also the fact that a premium brand has to charge premium prices to maintain the customer’s view of it, but there’s really not much else there to BAPE. The brand’s “patent leather” Bapesta sneakers were often made of plastic and cracked and chipped after just a few wears. The T-shirts, though definitely a cut above once upon a time, are now just bog-standard tees with a little woven label, and the rest of the garments, however well-made and layered with details, are still made in China for Chinese labour costs. Being at the forefront of streetwear’s rise to global dominance over the last three decades, BAPE’s influence on alternative and mainstream culture is evident. Revered Japanese interior design studio Wonderwall is responsible for the aesthetics of BAPE’s retail locations, a partnership formed in 1997 when founder Masamichi Katayama met NIGO, who was looking for somebody to renovate the NOWHERE space.

Wong is also the Founder of ABOVE SECOND gallery in Hong Kong, Creator and Lead Director of World Wide Walls (formerly POW! WOW!), and Co-founder of community art center LANE LANE STUDIOS. Wong spends most of his free time teaching art classes at Palama Settlement, a community center in an underserved community. Incorporating his signature elements with BAPE®’s iconic camo, Inkala ventures into pattern work — a first for the artist — with each painting a variant of the other. Lining up the paintings and flipping through will make it appear as if the image is animated. Born in Lima, Peru, and based in Los Angeles, Alvaro Ilizarbe is a multi-disciplinary artist whose works interact with his daily surroundings. Using patterns, cypher, pre-Columbian linework, and the language of advertising, Ilizarbe creates works that explore the energy between things, forming multiple dialogues with space, place, and art.

While the original BAPE Shark hoodie featured a simple block-color with a half-woodland camo hood, later iterations would incorporate other Bape insignias into their designs, such as BAPE Camo, the Bapesta Star and the brand’s distinctive plaid pattern. Another factor that contributes to BAPE's high resale value is the brand's association with street culture and celebrity endorsements. BAPE has collaborated with many famous artists, musicians, and brands over the years, and these collaborations generate a lot of hype and demand for the products.

A longstanding icon of BAPE GALLERY™, SHARK SEIJIN is an enigmatic contemporary artist whose works speak for itself. With a background in fashion and fine arts media, the artist actively blurs the distinction between aesthetic contemplation and functional representations, creating works that bring forth BAPE®’s unique interpretation of art and fashion. Mysterious and experimental, SHARK SEIJIN draws focus to his works of art rather than himself. Inspired by the ever-changing graffiti art on NYC building façades with layers of spray paint overlapping each other to create a camouflage, LILKOOL reinterprets the BAPE® camo pattern to best represent the industrial environment of New York. Having worked with Hulu, NBA, Uniqlo, Versace, Microsoft, Toyota, Marvel, and more, Wong has devoted his career to fostering new connections through art, reframing conversations on public and private spaces, and how art and NFTs can be used as a tool for inclusivity.

For a long while in the UK and the United States, product stayed pretty much tied up exclusively in the brand's flagship stores. Since I.T’s takeover, however, things have laxed up a little bit, and there are loads of options for where to buy BAPE, with the added luxury of trying it on before you buy. The partnership between BAPE and G-SHOCK is significant as being the hard-wearing Casio line’s first collaborative project and one of BAPE’s earliest, with the first watch released in 1998.

Overall, BAPE's sizing can be a bit tricky, so it's best to do some research and try on different sizes to find the best fit for your body type. The partnership between Nigo and Pharrell grew in 2005, as the two co-created the brand Billionaire Boys Club and Ice Cream. Oso de Agua is an art collective duo formed by plastic artist Diego Florez Gonzalez and audiovisual communicator Brunella Berscia Ciccia. Working in various mediums such as canvas, mural, and sculpture, Oso de Agua is inspired by and presents nature in abstract form. Delving into the relationship of nostalgia and mathematics, Lister reimagines the classic original Ape Head logo in his pixelated painting technique. One of five paintings in a series, this work explores color (yellows contrasted with blacks) to capture the essence of BAPE® .

From Soulja Boy’s unforgettable 2007 mantra “I got me some Bathing Apes,” to today's triumphant return of the BAPE STA™(by way of multiple exclusive SSENSE colorways), BAPE is no less relevant now than it was 30 years ago. Here, find out how NIGO (who recently added artistic director of Kenzo to his extensive résumé) built the brand, and all of the creative collaborators and famous fans that contributed along the way. Second, BAPE camo, with its blobby, "hyper flat" style inspired by traditional duck-hunting camouflage, brings to life the glossy, cartoon-esque, joyful, and fantasy element of Japanese fashion without being cheesy or corny. Tokyo is the birthplace of Hello Kitty, anime, collectible dolls, and kawaii culture, and that splodgy, super-smooth aesthetic clearly reflects that. BAPE has become incredibly popular worldwide due to its unique designs and limited edition drops.

The home served as a treasure trove of all things BAPE, and housed the designer’s personal art collection and archive of hyper-rare vintage pieces in the basement. In 2013, for BAPE’s twentieth birthday celebrations, the home was opened up to the public as BAPELAND, an archive exhibition. FOOTSOLDIER began in 2001 as an outlet to showcase and sell the ever-expanding BAPE footwear line.

Working closely with revered Japanese designer Kazuki Kuraishi, Nigo and Aspden facilitated the creation of four ‘Super Ape Star’ silhouettes which incorporated key BAPE insignia and motifs into the iconic adidas Superstar silhouette. This was later followed by four mid-top ‘Super Ape Skate’ silhouettes which revived the hype. By 2010 the brand had fallen out of vogue, and it emerged that A Bathing Ape had amassed over 2.5 billion yen ($22.5 million) in debt. Nigo stepped down from the company as CEO, and in 2011 the brand was sold to Hong Kong fashion conglomerate I.T for a paltry $2.8 million.

The BAPE STA™ sets new standards in fashion by seamlessly blending luxury and streetwear aesthetics and is sure to captivate sneakerheads and fashion enthusiasts alike with its impending release. A few years back when the Raf Simons/Rick Owens hype was arguably at its peak, pretty much every single streetwear brand out there was creating blacked-out collections making heavy use of slim, extended silhouettes, drop-crotch pants, draped layers and minimalist graphics. Never one to miss a trick, A Bathing Ape joined in with their own sub-line, A Bathing Ape Black. As mentioned earlier on in this article, BAPE was one of the first fashion labels to create products encompassing every corner of everyday life, allowing streetwear fans to literally live a BAPE-branded lifestyle. Beyond clothes and sneakers, the brand has produced kitchenware, furniture, toiletries, fishing hooks, bed linen, skateboards and much more.

In any major developed city around the world, you’re likely to see kids wearing box logos. Style-conscious consumers, from your 6-year-old cousin to your law firm partner uncle, are looking for a pair of Dunks. The screen was made from bamboo fibers, which reflected the sustainable interiors of the LF-ZC. The bamboo composition also paid homage to the 1,500-year heritage of Echizen washi, a traditional paper found in Japanese homes.

There are very few BAPE debates that do not include the crucial question of why BAPE is so pricey. By 2010, the brand had gone out of favor, and it was revealed that A Bathing Ape was in debt to the tune of almost 2.5 billion yen ($22.5 million). Nigo stepped down as CEO, and the brand was sold to Hong Kong fashion conglomerate I.T in 2011 for a pittance of $2.8 million. Nigo stayed with the firm for the next two years to help with the transition, founding his own vintage-inspired label Human Made and taking on a new role as Creative Director of Uniqlo's 'UT' T-shirt line. Though the BAPE tale would be incomplete without the brand's spectacular climb to success in the United States, the brand's sudden recognition came with a slew of issues. Product scarcity in the United States, along with BAPE's relatively high costs for young Western consumers, resulted in the growth of counterfeit products, overwhelming the market before the brand could find its footing.

Hailing from the island of Okinawa, Japan, Tomotatsu Gima grew up under the influence of Japanese and American cartoons and pop art. Creating collages of logos and color prints on corrugated cardboard boxes, which he calls POP COLLAGE, disposed cardboard boxes serve as the material for his art, with any trash created in the process recycled. Merchandise transported in the boxes he uses as a medium became a motif of his art; by creating works using globally recognized products, he aims to inspire others to think about the meaning of “distribution” and “consumption”. Boxes of chewed, broken and unsharpened pencils were the beginnings of a passion for art that led to the eventual creation of tokidoki.
